hello, chicago

words by cameron / photos by hana moriah smith and cameron logan cox / edits by cameron

when i was twelve my family moved from rural missouri farm town to west chicago suburbs. it was a culture shock in the best way and i enjoyed my time there immensely before I moved to kansas city.

in april my friend hana gave me a reason to go back, she being from the west suburbs herself. her mom was getting married, so naturally we took on the photo & video duties. we decided that after the wedding, we would go into the city to pal around for a few days.

chelsey, hana and i grabbed a room at hotel felix. we mostly used it as a storage room for all of the wine we kept drinking while we were there... and the beds.

we ate a ton of good food. portillo's is one of the things we all miss a lot.

our days consisted of a lot of walking and ubering. we didn't opt to rent a car because a. chicago traffic sucks and b. we were drinking a LOT of wine

it was cold but not too bad for walking.

the chop house

'stand by this wall'

'essence: cigarillo and camera'

we walked to navy pier to see if the ferris wheel was open (it wasn't) and to see the water.

that botanical garden on navy pier was one of my favorite places to visit when i lived here. being inside of it again was surreal. the architecture is so 'legion' (fx show, watch it). after our adevntures walking, we ubered back to the hotel and caught a second city show 'dream freaks fall from space' which was amazing. make sure you go there and cach the main stage act when you visit.

then it decided to snow on the second day.

we wound up going to navy pier again on the day it snowed because we're crazy people who think it's smart to go towards the water when it gets colder.

after freezing our butts off by the water, we went inside the expansize building on the pier and explored as we drank wine, not necessarily following the paths we were supposed to be on.

we tried to go to the art institute of chicago in order to become cultured, but our dumb sleves didn't realize we couldn't get in with our dslr's. before we caught another second city improv show (2 in a row - they are seriously amazing) we decided to make our way to the most typical spot in chicago ever:

every typical photo ever taken here ever

after the second city show we crashed at the hotel. the third day was our last day, and we had to catch a train right after noon. we woke up early and walked around a little bit on what was a beautiful sunny morning.

this guy was so happy to have his photo taken.

an amazingly haunted house just down the street from our hotel.

the beautiful poetry foundation, containing over 30,000 volumes a.k.a. chelsey's good place

we had to visit the chicago lego store to get a souvenir for my son phoenix (he got a thanos brickhead because he already had all of the infinity war sets 🙄 )

after getting a lego for our kid and taking in the view one last time, we went back to union station and waited for the long ride home.

we had a great time and cannot wait to go back. so somebody, please, just give us a reason.
